Brothers Interview

BY: Liza Boodhansingh

Q: How is your acoustic pop band as Brothers different from 1985?
A: It's different from 1985 because 1985 songs are co-written with co-front man Tom DeGrazia. Brothers features just Cam and I. 1985 is more of an upbeat, energetic sound, while Brothers conveys a more emotional sound.

Q: Tell me about your sound and style.
A: Our single "12 Degrees" is an emotion-driven ballad. We focus a lot on organic and orchestral elements as well as lyrical content that tells a true story. Our album that we are working on features a little bit of everything we love. We don't want to give away too much, but we can't wait to share it.

Q: Tell me about your writing process.
A: Cam starts with an acoustic guitar and brings forth melodic ideas. He shows his ideas to me and adds early production as well as the majority of the lead guitar work. We are a great team because we live right next door, and we've been together our whole lives, so we are never afraid to express honesty.

Q: Your band's bio on Facebook is all about family and a dream. Has music run in the family? Or is this your way of bonding?
A: Music definitely runs in our family. Almost everyone on our mom's side of the family, including our other siblings, plays music in some way. We are doing our best to carry on the musical legacy of our family and share it with as many people as possible.

Q: Who or what is your music influenced by?
A: Our music is influenced by anything from Blink 182 to The Script. We really like all kinds of music but do take quite a bit of inspiration from our favorite bands growing up.

Q: Pick one of your songs and tell me the story behind it.
A: Our song "12 Degrees" is about Cam's old long-term relationship leading up to a breakup. If you listen to the lyrics, the story is very obvious.

Q: Is there anything else that you would like to add for 1 a.m. Media?
A: We really appreciate all of the support we've had with past projects. We hope people will embrace Brothers, as we can't wait for everyone to hear what's in store for 2013.

Go To Hell Tour Review

BY: KC Brown
(Photos by: Liza Boodhansingh)

With an well-chosen line-up and great set lists from each band, the Go To Hell tour was certainly a sight to see. The first opening band was Stages and Stereos from Tallahassee, Florida. The alternative/indie band certainly held their own against the two other bands and fit perfectly into the line-up. Not only was their music catchy and attention grabbing, but they had an enormous amount of energy and interacted well with the crowd. Their original songs sounded a bit like Mayday Parade, but with their own twist. Their cover of “Creep” by Radiohead was incredible.
The second opening band was Paradise Fears from Vermillion, South Dakota. It was no surprise that they put on a fantastic show. They played original songs like “Last Breath” and “Violet” along with a short cover of “The Fighter” by Gym Class Heroes and “Iris” by The Goo Goo Dolls. Of course they played their most popular song, “Sanctuary,” during which you could hear the whole room singing along and reciting the speech.
As well seasoned performers, the opening acts got the crowd more than ready for the headliner, Go Radio, who is also from Tallahassee, Florida. Go Radio took the stage and put on a breath taking show. Their 14 song set list was arranged perfectly with a mix of upbeat songs such as “Go To Hell” and “Things I Don’t See” and slower songs such as “What If You Don’t” and “Goodnight Moon.” Their lighting was insanely beautiful and well thought out. Perfect tours don’t come around often, but this was one of them. If you want an amazing show from all the bands involved, I urge you to see the Go To Hell tour.
There aren't many dates left on this tour. If you're in the area, you do not want to miss out on this tour!

Review: The Maine/Mayday Parade Tour

BY: Court Smith

The chilly Wednesday night at the Union Transfer in Philadelphia held high hopes and wonderful notes. The show in store for the buzzing crowd consisted of three alternative artists, known as The Postelles, Mayday Parade, and The Maine. This was a co-headlining tour, so The Maine and Mayday Parade switched on and off every other night. The doors opened at six that evening, while the show truly began as soon as the weathered boot soles took place on the stage.
Originally from the Big Apple, the first artist taking the stage was the four-piece band, known as, The Postelles. They held a very eclectic atmosphere about them, as did their songs. They played tracks from their debut, self-titled album, such as “White Night” and “Hey Little Sister," The most enjoyable part of their set was not having seen them before, but seeing the gratified look on their faces for being on that charming stage. One could tell that they weren’t doing this for the money, but for the experience.
On deck, abandoning their home in Tempe, Arizona for the “City of Brotherly Love” was The Maine. This comely, five-piece band is held in high regard in all of their fan’s hearts, and for a reason one can plainly see while witnessing their charismatic stage presence. To begin, lead singer, John O’Callaghan, briskly sauntered across the boards to the piano on stage-right. With the first touch of the keys lingering in the air, O’Callaghan meandered into the hauntingly beautiful melody of a protracted version of “Like We Did (Windows Down)”, a track off of their most recent record “Pioneer." They made it a point to play different songs every night of this tour, and so they did. This night’s songs consisted of “Misery," “Whoever She Is," “Right Girl," “Growing Up," “I Want You," “Inside of You," and “Some Days."

Last, but not least in the co-headlining set was Mayday Parade. Stemming from Tallahassee, Florida, this five-piece thing of beauty hopped into the spotlight with smiles on their faces. Throughout their highly-anticipated set, they played fan favorites, such as “Jersey," “Black Cat," “Three Cheers for Five Years," “Terrible Things," “Everything’s An Illusion," “One Man Drinking Games," “No Heroes Allowed," "Oh Well, Oh Well”, and “When You See My Friends." Seeing Mayday Parade live is truly a sight for sore eyes. Hearing those notes sung in unison by every voice in that venue was simply, a moment to lose yourself in.

I highly recommend making it out to this tour, and if you wish to go the remaining tour, dates are below:

"Don't Panic" Album Review

BY: KC Brown

Absolute Punk wrote that "Don’t Panic" is All Time Low’s “best album to date” and they weren’t stretching the truth. "Don’t Panic" is All Time Low’s fifth album and the best by far. After the split from Interscope, All Time Low returned to Hopeless Records where they have had their most success. It’s obvious that they went for a more mature sound with this album. The diversity and lyrics are proof. The album starts out with “The Reckless and the Brave,” an anthem about leaving suburbia and making it as a band. Going along with that, in “So Long Soldier” Gaskarth sings about coming to the United States from England and All Time Low’s journey as a band by saying, “You can’t shake the noise from their bones." Many songs are about staying young and living in the moment such as “Outlines,” “For Baltimore,” and “Somewhere In Never Land” where they write about “Sticking it out and trying to feel forever young." In contrast, “Thanks To You," “Paint You Wings,” “To Live and Let Go,” and “Let Me Be” are about being used, moving on, and being your own person. It wouldn’t be an All Time Low album without a song about a one night stand, which is “Backseat Serenade.” Cassadee Pope, formerly of Hey Monday, provides vocals for "Backseat Serenade." On a more personal note, Gaskarth writes about missing someone and how he “Can’t sleep without you pressed up against me.” Not only are the lyrics well written, but the instrumental music is flawless. This album shows All Time Low headed in a new, more mature direction.

Interview with Alex Wiese of Jocelyn

BY: Liza Boodhansingh

Q: Introduce yourself and your role in the band.
A: My name is Alex Wiese, I play bass for Jocelyn.

Q: How did you come up with your name?
A: Jocelyn is whoever people need her to be. So, the reason we have a band phone number, is because we believe that everybody has a story and it's important that somebody is always listening. We respond to every single text and voicemail we get.

Q: Describe your music.
A: Jocelyn is mainstream pop/rock - very similar to bands like Cartel, Yellowcard, or the Downtown Fiction.

Q: Pick one of your songs and tell me what it is about.
A: Our song "Everything (I Want to Know)" is that final step in a relationship, when you have all but given up on someone turning their life around and being the person you so desperately want and know they can be. Hence the lyrics "I gave up on us baby but don't do the same. Even though it hurts you to tell, everything I want to know."

Q: What can fans expect when they see Jocelyn live?
A: We have yet to play a full band live show. Our marketing strategy right now has been extremely promotional based, and trying to get our name and faces out there as fast as we can. So, I'm not exactly sure, but we'll all be in for a wild ride as we find our live show identity together. The only thing I can guarantee is a LOT of time to hang out when we're off the stage. We're going to set a new standard for being accessible and interested in learning people's stories. We have no use for a green room because there's no reason to be hidden behind stage when you should be meeting the people who have paid to see you.

Q: What have you found to be the biggest challenge so far as an artist? How have you dealt with that challenge?
A: The hardest part is covering all the bases. Starting a band from scratch is just like running a small business, plus you have to be talented and constantly improve your craft. You have to know logistics, marketing, management, taxes, government bureaucracy and much more. There's a never ending list of things to do.

Q: If you could tour with anyone, what bands would be on your dream tour?
A: Anberlin, Mayday Parade, and the Starting Line.

Q: Tell me the number one thing on your bucket list.
A: Raise a family.

Q: If you were a Disney princess, which princess would you be?
A: Princess? haha How about Prince Charming, we'll go with that ;)

Q: If you were a dinosaur, what kind would you be?
A: Pterodactyl, for sure

Q: Is there anything else that you would like to add for 1 a.m. Media?
A: People matter and your story is important. Do not be afraid to pick up the phone and shoot us a message for whatever reason. We're always available. 319.804.9727
"People matter. Your story is important. Join the circle."

Make sure to pick up Jocelyn's EP, "To You and Yours," on iTunes!

Stealing Jade Interview

BY: Liza Boodhansingh

Q: Introduce yourselves (Name, age, role in band).
A: Hey I'm Emily, I'm 16 and sing and play rhythm guitar.
I'm Caroline, I'm 16, sing and play lead guitar.

Q: Was there a specific person who inspired you to pursue music?
A: Emily: I think I've always been interested in music but my desire to actually become a successful musician was when I met Paradise Fears.

Q: Tell me about your experience opening for Paradise Fears in NYC.
A: Emily: I don't even know how to begin to describe it. It was amazing and a complete dream come true.
Caroline: I have to agree. The crowd's energy was awesome and the whole night was just a blast!

Q: Did you learn or gain anything from the experience?
A: Emily: Definitely! I learned how everything kind of worked, the schedule and what not!
Caroline: Same! It was cool and helpful to see the behind the scenes stuff!

Q: Pick one song of yours and tell me the meaning behind it.
A: Emily: Prove Me Wrong is probably the most personal song to me because it was the first song I've ever written. It is not released yet but you can find it on the internet somewhere haha The story behind it is this girl that is completely in love with this one boy but is kind of wary about him. The song is basically a dedication or letter to him saying prove me wrong and let you really be perfect.
Caroline: New Life is probably the most meaningful for me and it's all about starting over, a clean slate and having a second chance.

Q: Do you name your guitars? What are their names?
A: Caroline: No! We don't name our guitars, we really should though.
Emily: I call my Taylor my 'baby' because I am always so careful with it but no official names!

Q: Celebrity crush?
A: Emily: Ah, mine has to be Zac Efron.
Caroline: Damon from The Vampire Diaries!

Q: What is one thing most people don't know about you?
A: Emily: I can't do a cartwheel!
Caroline: I sleepwalk? haha

Q: Is there anything else you would like to add?
A: Emily: Just thank you for all the support and love we've gotten so far!
Caroline: What she said haha

Interview with Joey "Thunder" Brobeck of The Cab

BY: Liza Boodhansingh

Q: What projects are you currently focused on?
A: We're all mainly focused on The Cab, we are all working very diligently on being the tightest band possible. We have lots of events/plans coming up and you can never be too ready. Other than that I'm a new member of Buzznet which is a whole new world to me since I've never been one to blog before, needless to say I'm having a blast with it.

Q: What do you hope to gain from touring with Maroon 5?
A: The main goal we have here at The Cab is just to be heard by as many people as possible. On top of that it's pretty much a dream come true opening for Maroon 5 not in my wildest of dreams would I ever say it could be a reality. It's such an honor.

Q: When you were beginning did you ever think that you would become as successful as you are?
A: Honestly, I didn't even think it was a possibility to get paid doing what I love (playing bass) till I was 18. It just kind of clicked one day when I was practicing with my good friend, Sam Esbin who is an amazing guitarist; we kind of realized that we've been playing together for years and never got paid at any of the dozens of dozens of shows we've played... We were very innocent and young about it. But that's honestly how I know I'm doing it for the right reasons. Happiness is always more of a priority over money, for me anyway.

Q: What is one of the most important lessons you have learned as an artist?
A: Staying true to myself is the most important lesson I have learned. Touring for so long has a way of warping one's reality, you have to keep your feet on the ground.

Q: If you had to switch places with a band member, who would it be and why?
A: I would probably want to swap with Dave Briggs. I'm a huge nerd of the rhythm section!

Q: Do you ever crave a 9-5 sort of job that doesn’t require as much creativity?
A: Not at all, I worked retail from the ages of 16-18. If I wasn't able to express myself through art I would go insane, that simple.

Q: Which song, by any other band, do you wish you had written?
A: There are so many but at this point and time: September by Earth Wind and Fire. Such an inspiring song.

Q: Things that would make your love life more exciting:
A: Being in love is all I need and I am in love with our fans, the music we play, the person I am with. There isn't much more that can get me even more excited.

Q: Things you wouldn’t want to know about your grandmother:
A: I don't know her very well but i know what I've done in my early 20s surely wouldn't want to know about her early 20s. Ehhk

Q: Things you shouldn’t title a children’s book:
A: "I wish daddy didn't drink so much"

Q: Is there anything else that you would like to add for 1 a.m. Media?
A: Thank you for your time, love and support it means the world to not only myself but everyone in The Cab's camp.

Living a Dream Turns Tragic

BY: Jessye Mess

Just recently, the band While We’re Up has been facing tragic events. The band has been following the famous Vans Warped Tour this summer to promote their music. In the early morning hours of July 8th, the band experienced a tragic car accident en route from Chicago to Shakopee, Minnesota. The car’s right rear tire exploded. Immediately, the car lost control and overturned on the highway. Unfortunately, Zachary Booher, guitarist/singer, was instantly killed. Steven Rouk and Trevor McCoy, a friend of the band, were rushed to the hospital where they spent time recovering. Trevor has suffered minor head injuries and lung damage. Steven is recovering from head and neck injuries as well as minor lung damage. The band added on their Facebook that losing Zach was such a tragedy and that they are at a loss for words. Zach was an irreplaceable friend to many. Zachary’s mother has posted on the band’s Facebook recently adding, "We've received many requests for making donations to honor Zach's name. We believe the best way to honor Zach is by establishing a music scholarship in his name at ASU. If you'd like to donate, please personal message me for the account details. We're not allowed to post the account on the internet per bank rules. Thanks again for your prayers during this sad time.”-Joanna Booher. Surely, Zachary will be missed by many. If you would like to send condolences to the band, you can tweet them @WhileWereUp or leave a message on their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/whilewereup.

Josh Morgan Interview

BY: Liza Boodhansingh

Q: Introduce yourself.
A: My name’s Josh Morgan. I’m 16 years old, and I played my first show at 15. I also played eleven years of baseball before I ever played a show.

Q: Describe your music.
A: I try and take the vibe, sound, and presence of a full band and pack it into my voice and a guitar. When I write songs, I play them in my head as if I’m a pop rock band- bass, drums, keys, everything. Then I play what I hear, just acoustic.

Q: How did you get your start?
A: I was lucky enough to make a connection at the Crocodile Rock CafĂ© in Allentown, PA. They gave me my first show, followed by my second show four days later, with the help of Action Item’s Anthony Li. After those, I slowly began branching out to other venues, and promoting my music to large crowds. And its just kind of went from there.

Q: Who/what are you influenced by?
A: I take note from multiple genres, ranging from pop to metal, and alternative to rap. I don’t necessarily take the exact sound, but I’ll take it as, ‘Okay, what can I do like this?” It mainly influences my writing style. As far as specific acts, I look to Never Shout Never & The Summer Set a lot. After them, I listen to Allstar Weekend, Taylor Swift, or Plug In Stereo. Those five are probably my biggest influences.

Q: Describe your writing process.
A: Most of my songs take from a situation that I’m going through- or have gone through. I’ll just start to think into the situation, and what exactly happened. Some songs, I’ll speak metaphorically. Others, I’ll be blunt and literal. Then I hit times where just one line will appear in my head out of nowhere. I’ll just think, ‘Woah, cool. That could work.’ And from there I just chip away until the lyrics are complete.

Q: What is something that you’ve learned up to this point that has greatly helped you improve as an artist?
A: You can’t let a bad show get you down, or a non-lively crowd mess your set. It becomes hard to stay with your stage presence when there’s a room full of people plainly staring at you, and not doing anything. But you just have to lose yourself in the music, and have fun. If you do it right, they’ll get right into it with you. And as well, just to not continuously wonder what they’re thinking of your set. Because when you do that, your focus leaves, and you’ll mess up your song.

Q: What are your current goals?
A: Right now, I’m focusing on releasing the best EP I can. In the near future, I’d love to tour. I love getting to talk to people, and with a tour I could talk to a whole new crowd every night.

Q: Tell me about your best performance experience?
A: There are two- the first being a show I played with Sandlot Heroes. There was a big crowd, everyone was energetic and alive, and I had so much fun afterwards. Getting to talk to and take pictures with so many people made me really happy. The second would be the first sold out show I ever played- with Paradise Fears. They’re great guys, and it was just a lot of fun to play.

Q: Who would be on your dream tour?
A: Not too long ago, I decided if I could tour with anyone, it’d be Taylor Swift. Hahaha. Other than her, I’d love to tour with All Time Low, Never Shout Never, Allstar Weekend, & The Summer Set.

Q: What is your favorite song to cover?
A: I’d have to say What Makes You Beautiful. Everyone always dances, they know the words, so they’re singing along too. And nothing is cooler than when everyone is singing, and I can literally stop for a line and hear the whole room sing it for me.

Q: If you could be a Disney villain, who would it be and why? A: LOTS-O-HUGGIN BEAR FROM TOY STORY 3. I’d be fluffy, I’d smell like strawberries, and everyone would want to hug me!

Q: If you were an inanimate object, what object would you be?
A: Can I be the stuffed platypus that’s in my loft? It’s cool and it just chills there. WAIT. There’s also a Mudkip. I’ll be Mudkip.

Q: Is there anything else that you would like to add?
A: Just keep an eye on my Facebook and Twitter for new music and shows! Also, I’m always down to play house shows, so hit me up!
