Concert Review: American Authors 11/8

BY: Meghan Laverty

November 8th was my first visit to the Trocadero in Philly. The line for the Honda Civic Tour date in Philly featuring American Authors, The Mowglis, and Oh Honey stretched almost a full city block, and then wound around a street corner. Surprisingly, the show was not sold out, but I'd say it was fairly close.

Oh Honey was a solid opening act. I was mainly distracted by the adorable little kids clapping and air drumming side stage, and the guitarist's cable was particularly snazzy compared to most run of the mill guitar cables. . . But about their sound! The lead vocalists (Mitchy Collins and Danielle Bouchard) had some great harmonizing going on. Check out their hit "Be Okay" below.

I had seen both AA and the Mowglis before at various venues, but this show may have been both of their best performances.

The Mowglis are the musical equivalent of sunshine. They have an infectious glee that spreads throughout the audience. I can't identify any song as a standout from their set because everything was just that good. But if you absolutely must know what they ended their set with, it was "San Francisco."

Coldplay and Sam Smith. How do those artists relate to American Authors? Well, I'll cure your curiosity. AA covered each artist's songs during their set: Coldplay's "Yellow" and Sam Smith's "Stay With Me." I get chills just thinking about the covers. I knew Zac Barnett had incredible vocals, but the full range of his talent was fully realized that night. Not only did Zac kill it vocally, but the rest of the band had a SPECTACULAR arrangement for each song. You go, American Authors! Obviously all of their songs were incredible as well. And as they ended their set with "Best Day Of My Life," the crowd jumped in unison. American Authors really knows how to put on a show. Definitely add them to your bucket list of bands to see. You absolutely will not regret it.

Concert Review: Walk The Moon 11/5

BY: Meghan Laverty

Walk the Moon is highly infectious. No, I do not mean that if you go to see them live that you will catch a disease. Their energy is infectious. They command a room with such energy that rivals the best in their field. Walk the Moon describes themselves as an “indie/visual/lyrical” band, citing Talking Heads, David Bowie, and the Killers as major influences. I saw Walk the Moon at Underground Arts on November 5th. The show had been sold out for months. Thankfully, I stalked StubHub daily until under 24 hours before the show when ticket prices finally dropped to a reasonable price. The show was well worth the wait. I had previously seen Walk the Moon on another tour, but this was the first time I had seen them as the headliner. They picked a good opener for the final stop of the tour, PUBLIC. Their cover of Britney Spears’ “Toxic” had the crowd going crazy. Their excitement helped to build anticipation for Walk the Moon.

As Walk the Moon hit the stage, the crowd exploded. The band started with their massive hit “Tightrope.” They played every song from their first album, including the Holy Grail that is the song “Shiver,” in addition to five or so new songs. “Shut Up and Dance” is the band’s most recent single off of their upcoming album. The light show for that particular song was incredible. Considering Underground Arts is a relatively small, low-budget venue, their lights were comparable to that of a major venue. They finished their set with “Anna Sun,” and the crowd immediately cheered for an encore, during which they played five or more songs. Nick, the lead singer with a mullet-mohawk (which embodies their 80s influenced sound), really engaged the crowd during their song “I Can Lift A Car.” Their final encore song, “Jenny,” was the most energetic, with the band giving it 200%. Their pop rock harmonies are so well executed, and their energy and instrumentation are flawless. It was such a killer show!
