Concert Review: Walk The Moon 11/5

BY: Meghan Laverty

Walk the Moon is highly infectious. No, I do not mean that if you go to see them live that you will catch a disease. Their energy is infectious. They command a room with such energy that rivals the best in their field. Walk the Moon describes themselves as an “indie/visual/lyrical” band, citing Talking Heads, David Bowie, and the Killers as major influences. I saw Walk the Moon at Underground Arts on November 5th. The show had been sold out for months. Thankfully, I stalked StubHub daily until under 24 hours before the show when ticket prices finally dropped to a reasonable price. The show was well worth the wait. I had previously seen Walk the Moon on another tour, but this was the first time I had seen them as the headliner. They picked a good opener for the final stop of the tour, PUBLIC. Their cover of Britney Spears’ “Toxic” had the crowd going crazy. Their excitement helped to build anticipation for Walk the Moon.

As Walk the Moon hit the stage, the crowd exploded. The band started with their massive hit “Tightrope.” They played every song from their first album, including the Holy Grail that is the song “Shiver,” in addition to five or so new songs. “Shut Up and Dance” is the band’s most recent single off of their upcoming album. The light show for that particular song was incredible. Considering Underground Arts is a relatively small, low-budget venue, their lights were comparable to that of a major venue. They finished their set with “Anna Sun,” and the crowd immediately cheered for an encore, during which they played five or more songs. Nick, the lead singer with a mullet-mohawk (which embodies their 80s influenced sound), really engaged the crowd during their song “I Can Lift A Car.” Their final encore song, “Jenny,” was the most energetic, with the band giving it 200%. Their pop rock harmonies are so well executed, and their energy and instrumentation are flawless. It was such a killer show!
