Album Review: "Battle Scars"

BY: Liza Boodhansingh

Paradise Fears have begun a new chapter in their career as a band with the release of their new mini-album, Battle Scars. Two years ago, Paradise Fears was only beginning to gain a small following. One year ago, the band had just finished their first ever headlining tour. Fast forward to this week, and they have released Battle Scars, as they entered into a new era as a band. On the night of its release, Battle Scars charted at #2 on the Alternative iTunes charts, as well as breaking the top 20 overall on the iTunes charts. Let me remind you that Paradise Fears does not have a label or manager. Impressive, isn’t it? Coming from the small town of Vermillion, South Dakota, Paradise Fears sure knows what they want, and they’re not letting anything or anyone get in their way.

Battle Scars begins with a prelude stating, “This is a call to arms for the poets that are inside of us. This is shedding our skin and breaking the chains that are binding us.” This track sums up the album. You’re in for an emotional ride.

The next three tracks, “Battle Scars,” “What Are You Waiting For?” and “Warrior,” all flow together effortlessly. “Battle Scars” is an anthem for anyone who has ever struggled. As the song states, “we’ve all got battle scars.” It shines hope on those having doubts through lyrics such as, “hope is so much stronger than fear…you can light up the dark.” The bridge breaks into a speech, similar to the speech from “Sanctuary,” but this time around the speech is about fighting for what you want and marching on. “What Are You Waiting For?” rolls in to give the needed push to fight. With lyrics such as “This world is only there for those willing to take it,” and “You love it? Embrace it. You want it? Then chase it,” you will be ready to take your chances and embrace your fears. In the end, you come out as a “Warrior,” which is the next track on the album. “Warrior” was enhanced and re-released for “Battle Scars.” The ending connects these three songs together with the line “They don’t run from this like they did when they were kids because to not have some battle scars is to never have lived.”

There has to be at least one love song on an album, right? “Lullaby” fills the role of a long distance relationship and not wanting to say goodbye, but knowing that the special someone is on the other side. Often with love comes a break up. “Fought For Me” and “Used” reveal the fallout of relationships.

The album closes with a reprise of “Battle Scars” You will be picked back up in a blink after hearing the uplifting spirits in the melody and backing vocals by Brian Dales of The Summer Set. You’ll keep marching on.

Paradise Fears has come a long way since they embarked on their musical journey. I am constantly impressed by their achievements. They continue to mature with each music release. This album is proof of their growth and the start of a new beginning. I highly recommend that you pick up a copy.

“Never underestimate the power of ten thousand hearts beating in time.” – “Intro (Prelude)”

Tour Review: Marianas Trench - The Noise Tour Powered by Journeys

BY: Cheyenne Nielsen

After having much success touring their home ground during their "Face the Music" tour in late 2012 - early 2013, Canadian pop/rock band Marianas Trench took the opportunity to cross borders and pay a little, much needed visit to the United States. Freshly signed to Cherrytree/Interscope Records, the four man band set out in May on the "The Noise Tour Powered by Journeys." Starting in Washington, Marianas Trench set out on a 26 date tour, covering most of the US. Everywhere from Boston to Dallas to San Francisco, Marianas Trench was bound to be in a town near you.

Opening for the exhilarating performers were DJ Protector, Ghost Town and Air Dubai. These openers would not be what you expected going to a Marianas Trench concert, but that is certainly what kept the crowd's attention. First up to the stage was Protector. As a DJ used to playing clubs in New York, he was able to keep the energy up by using his own lyrics, own voice, and his own chest pumping music. On deck was California natives, Ghost Town. With their Electronic/Alternative/Rock vibe featuring a few screams here and there, they drew in the crowd's attention with their upbeat music. Despite the fact the majority of the audience had not yet heard of this band, they owned the stage as if they were the headlining act. Since newly signed to label Fueled by Ramen, this tour acted as a great window of opportunity to get the band's name and face out to an audience that would be interested in their type of sound. Last to open but not least, was hip hop band Air Dubai from Denver, Colorado. Combining the energy from the audience with their already rhythmic beats and melodies, Air Dubai proved you do not need a studio to make you sound good. This is a band that you'd much rather listen to live than just give attention to songs produced in a studio and still be very pleased.

If you have tuned into the band's recent videos and the album "Ever After" joined by a story plot, you know the tale Marianas Trench has created. However, this story does not only continue with their music videos. Opening and throughout the show, the guys created short videos to accompany the already spectacular set list, keeping the crowd on their toes at every possible second. Mixing songs together for this list as far back as the band's discography goes, you are constantly singing the hits we all love. Marianas Trench kicks off the show with "Ever After," appearing on stage beneath the darkness of the venue and begins the heartfelt song with bursts of color coming from the lights they have sporadically, but also neatly, placed. In the midst of the cheering remaining from singer Josh Ramsay's between song commentary, they continue the show with "All to Myself," entertaining song "Shake Tramp," then "Toy Soldiers" before slowing it down with "By Now." As the band transitions into their hit "Desperate Measures," you can feel the vigor of the crowd rise once again. The second video plays and steals the audience's attention once more. Still interested in the who, what, when, where and why of the video, the crowd sings along to "Truth or Dare" and beautiful song, "Beside You." With the crowd showing what they do best, the show goes on with "Celebrity Status" and "Haven't Had Enough" accompanied by the singing along, clapping, and jumping around of the fans. Every concert go-er is capable of sharing a story or two from moments they recall of being in the crowd and singing along to a song, belting the lyrics with all the air in your lungs, with hundreds, sometimes thousands, of people singing along with you, and Marianas Trench playing "Fallout" was one of those moments. Despite the size of the crowd at the show I went to, there wasn't a single person in that crowd not screaming the lyrics along with the band. Changing pace once again, the band played the lively songs "Stutter" and "Cross My Heart" once again, calling out the crowds enthusiastic side. Rounding out the night, the band played slower songs "Porcelain" and with Josh taking the reigns by himself, playing "So Soon," both between the last two videos the band had to share. Last up, showing off their impressive light show skills again, the band shared their final song "No Place Like Home" which, for me, has such a cheesy place in the set but could not be placed any more perfect.

I haven't been to many shows in general, but I can say with full confidence that this is the best show I have ever been to and certainly not a show to miss. If you have the opportunity to see this tour, GO! You will never see a show like this. I do have some exciting news for those that cannot make it to this tour, though. Josh shared a little secret with us in Charlotte, stating, "Since being signed to Interscope, I can say that we WILL be seeing a LOT MORE of you in the future." So don't be discouraged, they'll come back soon!

If you're interested in going, these are the remaning tour dates and cities:
June 15th, 2013: Lewiston, NY @ Artpark
June 18th, 2013: Cleveland, OH @ House of Blues
June 19th, 2013: Cincinatti, OH @ Bogart's

Yellowcard Announce Release of "Ocean Avenue Acoustic" Album

BY: Liza Boodhansingh

A message from the band:

So much news to share. On July 22nd, 2003 our lives were changed forever. We didn't know that day what Ocean Avenue would become, but it is a chapter in our story that we will never forget. We knew that for the 10th anniversary of the release we wanted to do something more than just a tour.

Over the last few months we have been re-imagining all 13 songs in an acoustic setting. The release will be called simply, "Ocean Avenue Acoustic". Some of the songs have a whole new life, while others are acoustic renditions of the originals. We are so excited for you to hear what we've done. The record will be released worldwide August 13th on Hopeless Records.

Following the release we have some amazing touring planned. We will be bringing Ocean Avenue Acoustic, the Tour to the US, Europe, and Australia. In the US and Australia we will be performing the entire record acoustically from start to finish, and then closing the show with an electric set that covers the other albums. In Europe we will be playing the Vans Warped Tour, so the headlining shows will just be Ocean Avenue Acoustic. To hear the other records you'll have to get to the closest Warped date!

It's going to be a big year for all of us and you together. Ocean Avenue is a legacy that we are very proud of, so both the album and the tour are things we've put a lot of work into. Thanks for your continued love and support, and we will see you this Fall!
